“You can’t change the people around you, but you can change the people around you.” — Author unknown
We spend a lot of time and energy trying to change people who don’t want to change. We see the potential in someone, we want better for them, and so we keep pushing. But we can’t force someone to think differently, act differently, or want more for themselves. It simply doesn’t work that way.
What we can do is be intentional about who we let into our circle. The people we spend the most time with shape how we think, what we expect of ourselves, and what starts to feel normal. If we surround ourselves with excuses and complacency long enough, that eventually becomes the standard. Surround ourselves with people who are disciplined, accountable, and committed to growth, and that becomes the standard too.
Other people’s energy is contagious, whether we realize it or not. Spend enough time around someone who is negative, drained, or checked out, and eventually we start to feel it too. Our energy shifts. Our motivation dips. What we’re willing to accept quietly changes.
But the same is true on the other side.
Spend time around people who are focused, optimistic, and moving forward, and we begin to rise with them. Higher standards become normal. Growth becomes normal. Progress becomes normal.
It’s not about cutting people off because they’re struggling. Struggle is part of the process, and we all go through it. It’s about recognizing when the struggle has become the identity, when it’s no longer a season someone is in, but a place they’ve chosen to stay.
We get to choose our environment.
And sometimes the most powerful move isn’t trying to change the people around us. It’s changing who we choose to be around.
