“Truth is not what you want it to be; it is what it is, and you must bend to its power or live a lie.” — From D. E. Tarver, interpreting Miyamoto Musashi’s life and work
This is one of the underlying themes running through a lot of our transformations, the version of us that got us here wasn’t necessarily the version that was going to get us where we wanted to go, and to get the result we actually wanted, we needed to do something we hadn’t yet done. First we had to see our old habits for what they were, not what we’d convinced ourselves they were, the ones producing the same predictable results month after month, year after year, while we told ourselves a different story about why this time would be different.
For me it wasn’t only the scale, it was the reflection in the mirror. Neither cared how hard I felt I was trying. Both just kept confirming what I already knew, underneath the story I was telling myself. Once I stopped arguing with what they were actually saying, once I let it be true instead of something to explain away, change stopped requiring motivation or inspiration. It just required consistency, day after day, whether I felt like it or not.
We all have proved this worked in our own physical transformations, but let’s not get complacent and stop growing. Let’s find the part of our life where we’re still telling ourselves it’s fine, even though we already know it isn’t. Let’s stop arguing with it and bend to it.
